The Outer Banks is always on someone’s list of the best beaches. People from all over the world come to visit the Outer Banks to enjoy nature and the beaches and to learn about the history of the area. There are public beach accesses available throughout the Outer Banks so that you can enjoy the beaches up and down the coast. Many accesses also have outside showers and restrooms. Read on for a list of some of the accesses available.
Corolla
Corolla has several beach accesses, and you can often find public parking and public restrooms. Some of the beach accesses in Corolla include Corolla Village Road, Bonito Street, Perch Street, and Dolphin Street. Driving on the beach with four-wheel-drive vehicles is a great option to see Carova, which is to the north of Corolla, as well.
Duck and Southern Shores
Duck and Southern Shores has many beach accesses for those staying in the area, but they are not open to the public. They are Four Seasons Lane and Schooner Ridge Drive beach accesses for Duck, Hillcrest Drive, and Chicahauk Street. These accesses are for residents, renters, and guests of the town. There is private four-wheel-drive access from Oct. 1 to April 30 to drive on the beach in Duck. Driving on the beach is not allowed while in Southern Shores.
Kitty Hawk
Kitty Hawk is one of the top beach locations along the Outer Banks and is a main stop for many tourists and residents alike. Beach accesses include Bennett Street, Byrd Street, Eckner Street, Fonck Street, Hawks Street, and Wilkins Street. Accesses primarily include parking or basic access. Driving on the beach is not allowed in Kitty Hawk.
Kill Devil Hills
There are plenty of public beach accesses throughout Kill Devil Hills, as it is another top beach location for the Outer Banks. They include First Street, Atlantic Street, Martin Street, Woodmere Avenue, Raleigh Avenue, Ocean Bay Boulevard, Helga Street, and Chowan Street. Accesses such as Woodmere Avenue, Raleigh Avenue, and Sutton Avenue include showers and wooden walkways. With a permit, driving on the beach is allowed from Oct. 1 to April 30 based on the location. This program is connected to the Town of Nags Head’s beach driving program.
Nags Head
Nags Head also has many beach accesses. They include Albatross Street, Abalone Street, Bonnett Street, Hollowell Street, Conch Street, Grouse Street, and Isabella Street. Driving on the beach is allowed at certain points and with a permit from Oct. 1 to April 30. This is associated with a program in Kill Devil Hills.
Hatteras Island
Two primary beach accesses for Hatteras Island beaches include the Avon access along Highway 12 and the Frisco access, also along N.C. Highway 12. The Avon access includes parking, showers, and restrooms. The Frisco access has a bathhouse that includes restrooms and showers. A permit is essential for those interested in driving on the beach for Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island.
